Merganser sketch painting. Bird art drawing by illustrator Artmagenta
The Merganser (Mergus merganser)  breeds in northern Europe from Iceland and Britain eastwards across Scandinavia and the Baltics, Central Asia east to Japan. The bird also breeds in the northernmost parts of North America.
The Merganser stays in both fresh and salt water. During breeding season they live in pairs, and at other times in flocks. The Merganser's nest is often placed in cavities in trees or tree-like nesting boxes.
In the fall the birds often gather in large flocks to hunt fish. All birds form a line parallel with the shore and then swim towards land and continually diving and splashing with their wings. In this way, they run small fish in front of them to catch it near the shore. The Merganser live mostly by smaller fish.
