The Eider (Somateria mollissima) nests in Europe on the coast of Iceland, northern Britain, Norway, Netherlands, Germany, the Baltic States, Sweden and Finland and in parts of Denmark. In France it is rare. Further east the eider nests along the coasts around the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific and at the North American and Greenland coasts. Overwintering occurs in the southern Baltic Sea, around the Danish islands and the North Sea.
